Once
Kyle Ng By the pond, I saw life — fish swimming in unison, ducks drifting along the surface of the serene water. Frogs hiding in the grass, seeking cover from the warmth of the daylight. I stood there by the pond which would soon be gone, paved over by the foundations for a new building. The pond I once knew would be drained and filled to the brim with cement. Now, I stand here in the dark of the night and stare at a gray building. No longer will there be reflections of ripples in the water at dawn, frogs croaking, fish splashing. Now, only the eerie silence of the night fills my ears. I stand here waiting for a day that won’t come, when I can stand by the pond again. |
